CHURCH SEEKING DONATIONS FOR THE FAMILY AND POST DISASTER RELIEF CENTER************NEW RECTORY ROOF******FAMILY/POST-DISASTER RECOVERY CENTER BUILDING FUND PHASE II-JANUARY 2008 HOME VISITATIONS***********MAIN CHURCH ROOF REPAIRS
Please help raise money for the building of San Pedro Family and Post Disaster Relief Center. The big red thermometer outside San Pedro Catholic Church is already past the $1,000,000 mark and is inching on its way with each donation. Michael Fox, chairman of the fundraising committee, hopes that within a year and a half, the thermometer will reach the top of the $3 million mark.
"We can only begin building when we have raised $2.4 million out of the total $3 million,” Fox said.
The building center will be used as a disaster center in the event of flooding, hurricanes, and other natural disasters. According to the Red Cross, this will be the only center in the area that will offer this protection center.
“After Hurricane Charley swept throughout Florida, many families stayed in San Pedro’s activity center. That’s when we realized we didn’t have the necessities for these families.” said Pam Fleming, chairman of the drawing committee. “ With this new building, we will be more than functional.”
With more than 18,000 square feet, there will be meeting rooms, a full kitchen, and showers with a great water supply. There will also be locker-type rooms for families to put their things. The building will be generator-powered as well and be able to resist category five hurricanes.
The building will not be a shelter year round, but a post-shelter facility that will be open to families with nowhere to go in the event of natural disasters. However, many of the ideas have not been made final yet because the center needs to be built first.
This center will not only be a place for the families of San Pedro Church, but open to the community as well. Besides being a disaster relief center, plans include a family center too.
“We will have religious library materials, computers, pool tables and large screened televisions for family movie nights. It will be a safe, wholesome place for kids to go after school.” Fox said.
There have been several fundraisers to help with the cost of this facility including golf tournaments, parties, and pledge-drives with parish members.
Currently tickets are being sold for drawings that will take place from August 2007 to March 2008 (SORRY, SOLD OUT). If you purchased a ticket, you have a 10-to-2000 chance to win $10,000.
“There will be $100,000 which will be drawn in $10,000 increments with 10 drawings. Two drawings will be in December and another two will be in March,” Fleming said. “Then there will be one drawing for each of the remaining months Flemming said.”
Join us at the Activities Center at 10:30a.m. on the following dates for the monthly $10,000 drawings.

Many people have supported the new center. The church received encouraging letters from Ed McCrane, Sarasota County Emergency Management chief, state legislators and the American Red Cross.
“The biggest challenge is getting the word out,” Fox said. “We want to be better known throughout the community. We would also like to thank everyone that has supported this project and helped financially.”

FROM THE PASTOR.........NEW RECTORY ROOF
Recently there was suspicion that we may have active mold in the Rectory/Parish Office Building. I immediately hired a mold remediator to evaluate the building. Upon inspection, Dry Zone "found minor traces of (old) mold on the cabinets and drywall (kitchen)." A very specialized cleaning process was begun. After the final cleaning, a hygienist from Sybo,Inc.(Environmental Division)was called in to test the quality of the environment. The hygienist stated that "in my professional opionion, the remediation was successful and the building is free of mold and safe to repair and re-inhabit."
Since the old mold may have resulted from leaks in the roof and the cleaning process proved to be costly, I made the decision to replace the old rectory roof. Because of the roof's age and the increased cost of code changes effective October 1st, I contracted with Charles Roy roofing before the october 1st deadline to have this roof replaced immediately. the cost of this major expense is $23,000. If you would like to help defray the cost of this roof repair, please call (426-2500)or come by the Parish Office.

Since the building fund drive began in early 2006, many new families have registered at San Pedro Parish. Fellow parishioners have volunteered to visit these families in order to explain the need for and the benefits of building our Family Center. They wlll also visit other San Pedro parishioners, seeking their financial support and answering any questions they may have.
ARE YOU LOOKING FOR AN ADDITIONAL TAX DEDUCTION FOR 2007 AND BEYOND?
Then why not consider making a donation to San Pedro's Family Center Building Fund. Pledge cards are available in the church foyer and in the Parish Office. For more information about the building fund, please call the Parish Office at 426-2500.
